In the Carry-On

— ABOUT THE JOURNAL

About this site

Written from the seat, not the studio.

In the Carry-On reviews the gear and the experiences a long-haul flyer actually lives with — in-ears, bags, business-class seats, hotels built for working, the odd meal eaten alone at 9pm after a delay.

Everything is tested under the conditions it's sold for: cabin drone at cruise, a cramped tray table, a fourteen-hour battery demand, a month getting thrown around a packed bag. Not a quiet listening room, not a press trip, not a spec sheet — the actual job the thing is marketed to do.

The method is the whole point, so it's simple and it doesn't move:

  • Bought at retail. Every product here was paid for at retail price. Nothing is a loan, nothing is a sample, nothing arrived in a branded box with a note.
  • No samples, no sponsors. No brand has any say in what gets written, or whether it gets written at all. When something breaks or disappoints, that goes in the review too.
  • Tested, then scored. Each review ends in an ITC Score out of 100, built from a published rubric — and every score traces back to hours of real use, not a marketing claim.

The receipts. The whole position above is only worth anything if it's true, so here it is as a running tally:

No ring light. No "link in bio." No breathless thread about how a hotel changed my life. Just one person who puts in a lot of miles telling you what actually held up.

No name, no face, no brand to protect. Just the carry-on, and an honest read on what's in it.
